Financial aid as head of household vs. head of household with a claimed child on taxes?

If I didn’t claim my child on my tax return how will this affect my financial aid as opposed to claiming him. I am a single mom going to school part time. My ex decided to claim our son on his taxes (jerk). How will this affect my financial aid

  • Found-1:

It won’t as long as you correctly fill out the fafsa correctly. When it asks, how many exemptions… be sure this number matches what is on your tax form.

When it asks, How many people are in your household… be sure you include your son in this number if he lives with you and meets the criteria listed. DON’T exclude your son from this number just because your ex claimed him.

  • A Z:

If your son lives with you then you have the right to claim him on your taxes. You can go to court for this because you are entitled to the credit. A judge will GUARANTEED give you the money back and put your ex in place.

I don’t think you can file your taxes as head of household without any dependents listed though.

File your FAFSA as if your ex had not claimed him, while you take it to court, because I believe it will affect your financial aid.

  • Financial Aid Solutions Lady:

It will affect your taxes more than it will affect your financial aid. Your financial aid administrator will be much more interested in how you answer Question 90 on the FAFSA: How many people are in your household? Include in your household: (1) yourself (and your spouse, if you are married), (2) your children, if you will provide more than half of their support from July 1, 2008,through June 30, 2009, and (3) other people if they now live with you, you provide more than half of their support, and you will continue to provide more than half of their support from July 1, 2008, through June 30, 2009. The number of people you claim on your taxes DOES NOT HAVE TO MATCH the number of people you count in your Household on the FAFSA.
